About Pilates
Pilates (named Contrology by Joseph Pilates (1883 - 1967)) was initially created for rehabilitation in the 1920s. Some of the first people aided by Pilates were soldiers returning from war and dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine (to strengthen their bodies and heal their aches and pains). The core principles that Joseph Pilates based his work on were breathing, whole-body health and whole-body commitment (encompassing mind and body). He was ahead of his time, working holistically and creating exercises that incorporated mind, body and spirit. His system of movement is now world-wide and benefiting millions of people.
Stott Pilates is the contemporary approach to the original Pilates method based on modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation.
