Pilates (named Contrology by Joseph) was initially created for rehabilitation in the 1920s. Some of the first people aided by Pilates were soldiers returning from war and dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine (to strengthen their bodies and heal their aches and pains). The core principles that Joseph Pilates based his work on  were breathing, whole-body health and whole-body commitment (encompassing mind and body)

Stott Pilates is the contemporary approach to the original Pilates method based on modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation. Started by Moira Merrithew in 1988, Stott Pilates is unparalleled in the industry for the quality of education and standard of equipment they have developed. Stott Pilates training has been called the 'Ivy League' of Pilates education. At Pilates Now! all the instructors are Stott Pilates qualified and the equipment is all Merrithew Ltd to make it the best possible experience for any client.
